Buying Guide
There are a number of elements to consider when choosing a range hood that is right for you. This guide will cover the following topics:
The width of the range hood is generally determined by the width of the stove. As a rule-of-thumb, if your stove is 30" wide, your range hood should be minimum 30" wide. For Island hoods, it is recommended to use hood 1 size larger.
There are several types of hoods. Which type you choose will depend on your installation needs and kitchen design.
These hoods are secured to the wall. There are no cabinets on top and no drop-down ceiling (custom work is required for low ceilings).
Under-cabinet range hoods are secured to the bottom of a cabinet. Check the distance between the stove and cabinet to find the proper height. The distance between the hood and stove should be 24-30 inches.
Traditional island hoods are secured to the ceiling with a metal frame and hang down to about 30-36 inches from the cooking surface.
Insert type hoods are hidden inside a cabinet or inside a custom hood. The only visible area is the bottom with the filters, lights and controls.
Ceiling flush-mount units are usually insalled at the ceiling level. Some hoods can fit entirely in the ceiling and others require a shallow dropdown. The are the best hoods for maintaining a nice view.
BBQs require more powerful and larger range hoods. The typical duct size used is 10" in diameter.
600 CFM is the standard for most hoods. Anything more than 600 CFM will require 8" or 10" ducting. Smaller ducts that 6" will affect noise and suction significantly.
