Do all island range hoods need to be ducted?

No. Ducted venting is standard on most of Victory's island hoods, but the Jupiter is a dedicated ductless model built for kitchens where no duct route exists at all. It mounts on aircraft cable suspension instead of ceiling-anchored ductwork. Instead of venting outside, it cleans air through a charcoal filter and recirculates the air back into the kitchen. That filter needs replacing every 3 to 6 months, depending on how often you cook.

Why do island range hoods need more CFM than wall-mount hoods?

Island range hoods need more CFM than a wall-mounted hood of the same size because there's no wall behind the cooktop to block cross-drafts from HVAC vents, ceiling fans, or open windows. Those cross-drafts push rising smoke sideways before the hood can capture it. Higher CFM helps, but a wider capture area and enough hood depth to reach the front burners matter just as much. As a starting point, standard gas cooktops need 600 to 900 CFM on an island, and professional-style gas ranges need 900 to 1,200 CFM, which is why this collection's CFM options run from 600 to 1,200.

Can I vent an island range hood without attic access?

Yes. Codes require a ducted island range hood to exhaust outdoors regardless of attic access, so the duct just needs a different path. Three ducted routes work. The duct can run down through the floor to a basement or crawlspace. It can run horizontally to a nearby exterior wall if the ceiling joists point that direction. Or it can run through a framed soffit built along the ceiling when the joists run the wrong way or there's no joist bay to use at all. A ductless model is the fourth option, recognized under code as a listed recirculating alternative, for kitchens where none of those three duct paths exist.

Does a flush ceiling mount hood work as well as a suspended one?

Both can work well, but the right choice depends on ceiling height. A flush-mount hood sits flat against the ceiling, meaning its height above the cooktop is locked by your room's architecture rather than an adjustable hanger. Victory's flush models are engineered to fit standard home framing, 16-inch joist spacing, without requiring ceiling reframing. However, an unusually high or vaulted ceiling can still push a flush mount too far from the cooktop, weakening its capture. A suspended hood solves this by hanging on adjustable hardware, so it sits at the right height no matter how tall the ceiling runs. Check the specific model's manual for its maximum effective height before choosing.

Does a high-CFM island hood need makeup air?

Yes, a high-CFM island range hood needs makeup air when two conditions are met. Every model in this collection runs at 600 CFM or higher, which exceeds the 400 CFM threshold in IRC M1503.6. That code section requires makeup air only when a home also has a natural-draft, fuel-burning appliance, like a standard gas water heater or furnace, that isn't direct-vent or mechanically drafted. An all-electric home with no such appliance falls outside this rule regardless of CFM. Local building departments can set stricter rules than the base code, so confirm requirements with them before installation.

That's why island hoods typically need a wider capture area and higher CFM than a same-size wall-mounted hood.
